There are some artists whose work stays with you long after you first discover it.
For me, two of those artists could hardly be more different.
Vincent van Gogh entered my world through art history and a growing obsession with the wild colour, movement and emotion of Post-Impressionism. Years later, standing in front of his Sunflowers at the National Gallery in London became one of those wonderfully surreal little life moments.
Miss Lassie came to me differently.
While studying Caribbean art at university, I discovered a world of artists creating extraordinarily raw, expressive work from the places, materials and stories around them. When it came time for my final project, I found myself drawn to Caymanian visionary artist Gladwyn K. “Miss Lassie” Bush and her extraordinary home, Mind’s Eye.
Miss Lassie painted because it made her soul happy.
Her visions and imagination travelled across walls, windows, doors, ceilings — even the refrigerator became a canvas.
And somewhere in learning more about her, I recognised something.
Van Gogh and Miss Lassie lived in completely different places, circumstances and artistic worlds, but both created with an urgency that seemed to come from somewhere deeper than simply making something beautiful.
They made art because they needed to.
Vincent & Miss Lassie is my little ode to both of them — two very different artists whose freedom, instinct and devotion to creating have influenced the artist I continue to become.
And perhaps it is a reminder too:
Creativity doesn’t always need a grand purpose.
Sometimes making your heart happy is reason enough.
