Kitchen Caboose

$70.00

A playful look at the traditional Caymanian caboose — the humble outdoor kitchen that kept the heat and smoke away from the main house.

Kitchen Caboose

Before the modern kitchen became the heart of the home, Cayman had the caboose.

A traditional Caymanian caboose was a small wooden cooking structure, usually built separately from the main house. Raised on four legs and filled with sand and stones, it was designed to hold heat while keeping the smoke, fire and cooking heat away from the home.

And honestly?

There is something wonderfully practical about that.

This piece brings one of those everyday pieces of Cayman’s past back onto the page, with a little bit of my own whimsy thrown in for good measure.

The pumpkins may be doing their seasonal thing, but the caboose is the real star here.

It’s another little reminder that our history isn’t only found in grand buildings.

Sometimes it’s sitting quietly in the backyard, cooking dinner.
