I used to live on Main Street in Bodden Town.
Our house sat just down from the post office and the town clinic, with the sea across the road and the sweet shop only a few steps away.
Honestly, it was a pretty excellent place to be a kid.
The house carried that familiar mixture of salt air and home cooking. It was far enough from the sea to feel safe when storms came through, but close enough that going to the beach meant little more than crossing the road.
A family friend my grandmother had known for years would often visit us there. Sometimes she’d take me on tiny adventures across the street to the beach.
We’d sit with our toes buried in the sand, eating seagrapes and mangoes while the waves quietly rolled onto shore.
And every single time we headed out, I can still remember my grandmother’s voice booming from the front door:
Bring her back before her mother gets home! 😂
There was also the extremely important business of walking down the road to Ms Lillian’s shop for candy.
If you know, you know.
Drawing this piece brought all of that back.
Bodden Town was quieter then. Cayman itself felt more like a collection of little villages — places where neighbours knew one another, children wandered between houses and ordinary afternoons somehow became memories you carried for decades.
The street I’ve drawn here belongs to an even earlier Cayman than the one I grew up in — we did, in fact, have asphalt in my day. 😂 — but the feeling of it is familiar.
The houses.
The road.
The sea nearby.
The sense of community.
While I was putting it together, I kept smiling.
Because sometimes you start drawing a place…
and realise you’ve accidentally drawn your way back home.
Welcome to Down Main Street.
